The 319 species of hummingbirds are restricted to the New World, and are particularly abundant in the tropical parts of South and Central America. Hummingbirds are small, and the family includes the smallest of all birds, the bee hummingbird which is only 2.5 inches long. Most hummingbirds are brilliantly colored green, blue, and red. The bill is long and slender but varies tremendously in length as well as in shape. Hummingbirds live on nectar obtained from flowers supplemented with some insect food. They are unique in their abilities in flying and can even fly backwards.
