The slim and gentle maiden leans on a branch. The vegetative richness of the tree signifies her own blooming into womanhood. As the branches bend under the weight of the fruits, so does her fragile frame sag under the weight of her twin breasts. The flimsy bodice is barely able to restrain these orbs swelling with passion. The lower portion of her right breast is just visible, having managed to peek out of her drape.

The tree in the background is paradoxical. Though it is rich in fruits, flowers, leaves and birds, nevertheless, its upper branches present a bare picture of starkness. It echoes the predicament of the damsel. Though in the full bloom of her femininity and charm, the absence of a young lover who can both appreciate and exploit her beauty, taking it to its logical conclusion, is an insufficiency in her life which remains unfulfilled.

The artist has stressed lush rotundity and weight in the hips and breasts against a sophisticated slimness of the waist. The contrast of the extremely slender mid portion of the woman's body with the richness and exuberance of the breast above and the hips below has had for the Indian artist a continuos fascination since time immemorial. Her upper torso swaying gracefully towards the left presents a striking resemblance to an elephant's trunk. This element too is borrowed from ancient Indian iconography.

The creator of this artwork is Shri Harikrishen, arguably India's finest batik artist.
