Lalita- the beautiful one and Tripurasundari- she who is the most beautiful in three realms are epithets of the supreme mother goddess, underlining her role in the creation and sustenance of Srishti as the origin of every being- divine and human. In Shakta sects within Hinduism, Tripurasundari as “Kameshwari” or the goddess of desire, is the primordial being, who originates Shiva-Kameshwara from her body, and together with him continues the task of creation.

As the supreme divine entity, Lalita-Tripurasundari is the origin, middle, and end of the world. This acrylic on paper is a marvelous expression of the powers and exquisiteness of Lalita, who sits on a regal throne- Ratnasimhasana or jeweled throne, with Shiva, embraced by her to suggest the goddess’ primacy over him. Both Kameshwari and Kameshwara are youthful, with ornate jewelry amplifying their aura and crescent moon and third-eye marking their divine status.

Articles of worship are laid down in the foreground, with the Sri-Yantra, the ritual device, and a representation of Lalita in the center. Guardians and goddess figures on the top add to the sacredness of the painting, as emblems and extensions of the powers of Kameshwari, who brings desire (with her sweet sugarcane bow) and controls it (with the noose), eternally empowering the tasks of creation.
