This Tanjore painting depicts the head of all the Ganas (attendants) of Lord Shiva, Ganapati, riding a lion with a ferocious face and exposed teeth. Having the head of an elephant and the body of a human having eight arms (Ashtabhuja), this special form of Lord Ganesha is very powerful. Dressed in a bright yellow dhoti down to his ankles and ornamented with several jewels on his fair complexioned body, he holds a full-blown lotus flower, a branch of colorful flowers, and a pot of jewels in his upper left hands, while the lower hand is in Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness). The upper right hands hold an elephant goad and a flower bunch, while the lower hand is in the boon granting Varada Mudra. The beautiful crown on his head is finely carved and studded with red and green stones. Also, fact that such an intricate and delightful detailing on the Prabhavali above the icon of the lord in a painting is beyond belief.
