The gentle, straight-gazing Lord Ganesha. Seated on a jewel-encrusted throne of velvet-upholstered gold. It is balanced on the back of a gigantic rat, the Lord’s vahana (divine mount). From the crown and the attire of the Lord to the body of the vahana, these sections of the painting have been executed in gold-coated gesso work. This makes this painting a fine reproduction of a traditional Tanjore painting.
On either side of the central figure stand two mortal devotees. They are clad in dhotis and, from the way they wear their hair and the ash smeared on their bodies and the janeu across their torsos, belong to the scholarly caste. One of them fondles the vahana, another holds up a decorative arrangement, while the remaining two offer trayfuls of sweets and flowers to the Lord.
More of the glittering gold foil is to be found along the temple entrance-like upper edge of the canvas. The perfectly round back of the Lord’s throne is hemmed with gold. At its zenith is a Kirtimukham of solid gold. The composure of Ganesha’s countenance is one of profound wisdom and benevolence, which makes this a particularly expressive work.
