Lord Krishna, the irresistible cowherd youth from Vrindavan, was madly loved by the local milkmaids (gopiyaan); and in His turn, He loved them back. Under a wide-canopied kadamba tree He stands in His charming tribhanga form (the body jutting out laterally at three different places namely the shoulders, the hips, and the feet), playing on the flute. He is surrounded by a bunch of fair milkmaids, each having done their hair and shringar for His pleasure, each of them looking longingly at Him and in some way offering of herself to Him.
A limpid stream in foreground, from whose bosom sprouts a world of lotuses and lilies, perfuming the air around them. A peach-coloured sky indicative of a sun that has just set. This colourful pattachitra is defined by thick vines and lotus motifs along the borders, which add to the multitude of colours that make up this composition.
