If any god of the Hindu pantheon is undeniably human as well as divine, it is Krishna. He is not a mere figment of the imagination, an abstraction; but born of this earth, reared in the soil of Braj, yielding to the temptation of this world, indulgent, inimitable, lovable in his pranks. Yet, the form in which he transmutes himself, in which he becomes ethereal and divine, even magical, is when he chooses to dance and to play upon the flute.

In this image of his, Krishna is physically, irresistibly appealing. His exceptionally alluring countenance - a blue complexion soft like the monsoon cloud, shining locks of black hair framing a beautifully chiselled face, large lotus like eyes, wild flower garland around his neck, a yellow garment (pitambara) draped around his body, a huge peacock feather stuck on his crown and a smile playing on his lips. The movement of the limbs is slow and rhythmic. In fact, his entire person is grace personified and the essence of his personality is madhurya (sweetness).

The cow, whom the Hindus consider sacred stands behind Krishna. She too is mesmerized by the magic of his flute as she looks upon him. In the background is river Yamuna flowing with thick foliage on the banks.
