Established by Shankaracharya, Sacred Kedarnath temple IS ONE OF THE four Char Dhams situated in the Dev Bhoomi of Uttarakhand at high altitudes of 3580 m. Here Lord Shiva is worshipped in the “Sadashiva” form of a conical rock. The Kedarnath temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in India. Shiva eluded Pandavas in the form of a Bull in Kedarnath, diving into the ground. The Lord dived into the ground, leaving a hump on the surface and remaining portions - the arms, the face, the belly, and his locks (hair) at four different places. These five shrines make the revered Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit. May to October is the best time to visit Kedarnath. During winter, the temple remains closed. the idol is shifted to Omkareshwar temple in Ukhimath (Rudraprayag) and welcomed back again after 6 months in the Vaisakh (Apr/May).

The rectangular mandap and the Garbh-grih with a very high Dome(Gumbad) are depicted in grey color with snow-white lining all over signifying that the temple is built on a large platform built of large grey stone slabs.  The real statue of Nandi Bull staring at the temple is solidly portrayed in form of a giant image of Lord Shiva- “ sporting an impressive large snake around his neck, a large sized shining half-moon over his head with exciting heightened hair lock-up,  elongated thick hair line falling from behind by the side, peaceful and meditative face with half-opened large eyes, large majestic kundals in the ears,  dazzling Tripund ( three lines with a splendid tilak) on the forehead.

The sparkling white face and the portion of the neck represent the dark blue complexion of Shiva”. Behind the Kedarnath temple, stand the glittering golden Kedarnath and other Himalayan peaks and the silver-twinkling skies in light black. This stunning, amazing portrait of Kedarnath- Shiva is a must for all the Shiva –Bhaktas in their dwells for welcoming guests.
