Yogis and ascetics, spirituality and meditation, all have fascinated artists of all ages. The mystics seem to have mystique around them. The yogis are considered closest to God in mind and spirit and hence held in high regard.

Most yogis in paintings are depicted as being reduced to a skeleton due to severe meditation and fasting. But this one here is in the pink of health going by his protruding belly. He sits in a relaxed manner with a tiger skin around his waist. He is wearing strings of tulsi beads in his hair, body and is also counting beads on the rosary of tulsi beads. Sitting on a huge boulder next to the tree, he does not seem to have a care in the world. One of his arms rest on the yoga danda' and in the other hand he holds a chimta'. He sports a red dot on the forehead, which in the Indian tradition is supposed to repel evil.

The background and foreground are calm, uncluttered and peaceful, going well with the theme. To enhance the effect, the colours used are also sober and toned down. There is a slight impression of a halo around his head, signifying his status. The overall impact of the painting is strong owing mainly to the strength in draughtsmanship.
