Colour is an important element of art, a tool of sorts, for expression e.g. red symbolizes energy and vitality, green for prosperity and so on. Colour, therefore, makes the artists effort to express easier.

Tough is to make do with monochromes, where line and shading are your only aids. Not even delving into psycho analysis, it is apparent that the old man is self - possessed, aloof. He has his eyes closed, he does not want to communicate with the world around him. Besides forcefully closed eyes, the pursed lips and the frown are tell tale signs of upheavals life has burdened him with. The face is said to be the index of the mind. This portrait reveals not only the face but also the inner character of the figure. The artist has painstakingly depicted the folding skin, deep wrinkles to show the years he has lived. The curling, unkempt hair show that he couldn't care less.

As stated earlier, line is subservient to line, which is of varied thickness – varying with the demands of expression. The artist has created volume, texture, expression by the sheer strength of the line.
