The theme is narrative, that of a procession passing through the woods. The fact the common people are not around to appreciate the magnificence does not affect the enthusiasm of the musicians leading the procession. The quiet environment reverberates with the sound of the trumpets and drums. The large elephant, that occupies the central and major space, raises its trunk as a mark of salute to the royal couple seated on it - maybe at the behest of the mahaout and his goad. The king and the queen are seated on a makeshift throne with canopies. The elephant is adorned with a beautifully patterned over cloth and majestic ornaments. A courtier walks behind them with a sayaban in hand, as a mark or respect to the king.
A major part of the background is occupied by the foliage - large trees and bushes, almost similarly done, without any variation. The blue sky and the green vegetation is divided in a definite manner by a soft orange, a sunset kind of an effect. The artist has made use of limited colours but to best effect.
