Durga is a multivalent goddess. She is portrayed as an exquisite youthful figure with an alluring body, whose powers are represented by her multiple arms bearing weapons. She is accompanied by a powerful lion mount. This painting on silk represents Durga in her form as Singhvahini. In this form, she has four arms only and holds a sword and a shield. Dressed in red garments, she sits astride the lion. She wears an exquisite crown and jewellery adorning every part of her body, down to the toes. She has a fiery halo around her head that complements the henna adorning her hands and feet.
The fiercelooking lion is also adorned with ornaments. He looks as ferocious as his rider looks gentle. The background is in a pleasant shade of green. The artist demarcates the ground by placing some shrubs and flowers in the lower half. Ochre, black and red form the prominent colours of his palette, complemented by the cool green.
