An assortment of exotic shells arranged ornamentally are accurate and visually pleasing. One is a hermit crab trying to get into a shell. This particular crab when sights an empty shell, conveniently makes it its home. A shell of this kind often seen on the beach could show sudden motion because it is now the crab's protective cover. The murex shell on the left on the left has sharp edges to shoo away the enemy. It is placed in an upright position to enable the viewer to have an inside view also. The third shell on the right has a rounded form signifying it belongs to a larger sea creature.
The three shells do not seem to be the same picture. The corresponding border has very interesting drawings of molluscs shells, insects and also a finely drawn caterpillar. None of the drawings seem inconsequential and all hold an important significance. All the objects are attractive and well finished. The artist shows a great feeling for texture and great ability to draw fine detail. The art of conchology develops its own set of rules governing style, the artistic deformation and stylisation of reality but yet nothing compares to the unaffected simplicity of these naturalistic gems.
