Shakyamuni is said to have multiplied his form on a countless lotus throne. Here this motif is turned into a glorification of the Buddha ideal, expressible in various Buddha-bodies and bodhisattva manifestations. Instead of naturalism, the aim is to convey an impression of magnificence, emphasized by the very decorative character of the painting in the chevet: the treatment of blue colour contributes the effect. Sakyamuni is represented in the usual ‘earth witness surrounded by leaf, clouds and motley motifs around him which represents scenes from his life. The Buddha in bhumisparsha mudra represents after he gained the vision of the afterlife. To prevent unravelling, the canvas edges are folded over twice rather than hemmed. The canvas is threaded to four fabrics that are firmly attached with four weaving frames. This thangka was created by a hereditary artist who learned the famed art from their family. This monochrome painting is an enchanted picture that would brighten up your living room or bedroom. It's a beautiful thangka with clouds that look like a magnificent ballet of the heavens. River and silver paisley motifs float through the clouds. It has beautiful shading with cobalt blue and a gleaming golden edge.
