The Hindu thought gets translated in Hindu art. This ascetic meditates in an arid region with scarce or no vegetation around. A few wild plants erupt from the stony ground. The foreground is suggestive of the fact that the ascetic has intentionally selected an unfavourable milieu to make his meditation tougher. The growth of his nails and hair indicates the duration for which he neglected his physical self to attain spirituality. The expression on his face shows less of calm and more of determination to achieve what he has set out to do. He practices severe austerity in order to reach a higher transcendental order.
The bare background, the minimal foreground and the selection of the only colour add to the severity of the subject's task.
