This was the scenario when Guru Nanak offered these people the simple Sikh religion. He equipped them with new ideas, aims and aspirations and exhorted them to dispense with hypocrisy, pretensions and caste prejudices. Seen in this picture in a simple saffron robe and a similar turban, Nanak's only adornment is a rosary around his neck and a smaller one held in his hand. A turquoise shawl, which is indeed the artists gift to the iconographic image, covers the Guru's shoulders. Although Guru Nanak Dev was highly critical about the functionaries of the state and Brahmanical practices, yet he was equally compassionate in his disposition towards all. This quality seems responsible for the unfiltered glow of inner calm and tranquillity emanating from his face, spreading around him in a divine halo.
