Aniruddha was the grandson of Krishna and Rukmini, and Usha, the daughter of the Asura king, Banasura. Her friend Chitralekha, who was well versed in the arts, painted a portrait of Aniruddha one day. And Usha immediately lost her heart to Krishna's grandson, seeing in the portrait, the man of her dreams.

Aniruddha was secretly brought to Usha's palace by Chitralekha and he reciprocated her love. When Banasura discovered their meetings and their love for each other, he was incensed and imprisoned Aniruddha, thereby separating the lovers.

Meanwhile, Aniruddha's family was frantically searching for him. Krishna himself was perturbed at his grandson's disappearance. When Banasura declared war against Krishna, he finally realized where his grandson was.

Banasura was defeated in the fierce battle that followed, and Krishna himself reunited the lovers. Banasura also blessed the young couple when their marriage was solemnized with grandeur and tradition.

Here the two lovers resting on rocks are engaged in a lively conversation, suggested by the gestures of their delicately rendered hands and fingers.
