Ashtabhuja or eight-armed Varahi, is the aspect of the boar-faced Matrika or mother-goddess, as the Shakti of Vishnu-Varaha and the leader of Durga’s army.

Goddess Varahi in this bronze statue sits in the regal Lalitasana pose, with her dangling leg placed on a lotus flower- a symbol of the Universe, which is protected by the mother-goddess.

Shankha and Chakra are distinctly visible in Devi Varahi’s hands in Kartatrihasta or a scissor-like gesture of Vishnu associated with Varahi to the Hindu preserver god.

In her other hands, Varahi holds a goad, plow, noose, and stalk, along with Abhaya and Varada mudra, in an attitude similar to goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu, as whose emanation Devi Varahi is worshipped, evoked as “Narayani”.

Goddess with the Boar's Head

Behold the formidable presence of Varahi, one of the Sapta Matrikas, the seven mother goddesses of Hindu tradition. This striking bronze statue captures her unique and powerful iconography. Seated in a posture of regal ease, her eight arms radiate outward, each holding symbolic objects that speak to her diverse powers. The statue, standing approximately 12 inches tall, embodies a rich artistic tradition, meticulously crafted with attention to detail.

Divine Lineage and Cosmic Role

Varahi's distinct feature, the boar's head, immediately sets her apart. This theriomorphic representation connects her to the Varaha avatar of Vishnu, the boar incarnation who rescued the Earth goddess Bhumi from the depths of the cosmic ocean. In this association, Varahi is seen as a powerful force of protection and stability, embodying the feminine energy that upholds the universe. She is revered as the commander-in-chief of the army of the Divine Mother, ready to defend dharma (righteousness) against the forces of adharma (unrighteousness). Each of her eight arms is said to wield a weapon or a symbol relating to her powers, including the chakra and shankha.

Symbolism and Significance

Beyond her martial role, Varahi is also a goddess of prosperity, abundance, and occult powers. Her devotees often seek her blessings for success in endeavors, protection from negative influences, and spiritual growth. In tantric traditions, Varahi is associated with the night, and her worship is believed to grant access to hidden knowledge and abilities. The boar itself symbolizes strength, determination, and an unwavering focus, qualities that Varahi imparts to her worshippers. The statue's bronze construction further enhances its spiritual significance, as bronze is considered a sacred metal in Hinduism, known for its ability to conduct and amplify divine energy.

A Timeless Representation

This bronze statue serves as more than just a decorative piece; it is a tangible representation of a powerful and revered goddess. Its intricate details, from the ornamentation adorning her body to the carefully rendered features of her boar face, invite contemplation and reflection. Whether displayed in a home shrine, meditation space, or art collection, it will serve as a reminder of the divine feminine's strength, compassion, and unwavering commitment to maintaining cosmic balance. Its dimensions of 12.0 x 9.0 x 7.3 inches allow it to be placed with ease in a variety of spaces.
