In this rendition, Bhagwan Hayagriva, “the wondrous horse-headed avatar of Lord Vishnu”, unveils his ethereal presence alongside Goddess Lakshmi. Seated regally upon the coiled Sheshnag, cradled by the protective embrace of a tortoise, they compose a celestial spectacle. Adorned in majestic attire and crowned with a “Karanda Mukut”, Hayagriva wields the “Sudarshan Chakra” (the discus) and “Shankha” (the Conch Shell), emanating omnipotence. His “Abhaya Mudra” radiates fearlessness and courage. Beside him, Goddess Lakshmi, “also known as Vibha”, “the epitome of purity”, graces the Lord’s lap with a lotus in hand—an emblem of purity and prosperity.

Together, they symbolise the harmonious dance of courage, purity, and abundance in the cosmic symphony. Crafted in Panchaloha bronze from “Swamimalai” using the ancient “Madhuchista Vidhana (Lost-Wax) technique”, this artwork invites you to delve into the infinite realms of enlightenment and abundance.

Divine Embodiment of Wisdom and Prosperity

This magnificent Panchaloha bronze sculpture captures the divine presence of Hayagreeva, the horse-headed avatar of Lord Vishnu, accompanied by Goddess Lakshmi, the embodiment of wealth and fortune. The intricate craftsmanship, brought to life through the ancient Madhuchista Vidhana (lost-wax) technique, showcases the artistic heritage of Swamimalai, a renowned center for bronze casting in South India. The Panchaloha, a sacred alloy of five metals – gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron – imbues the sculpture with a unique luster and spiritual resonance.

The Lord of Knowledge and the Goddess of Wealth

Hayagreeva is revered as the deity of knowledge, wisdom, and eloquence. His horse-like face symbolizes the power of speech and intellect. In Hindu mythology, it is said that Hayagreeva retrieved the Vedas from the demons Madhu and Kaitabha, thus preserving the sacred knowledge for humanity. His presence signifies the dispelling of ignorance and the attainment of supreme wisdom. Complementing this divine wisdom is Goddess Lakshmi, seated gracefully on Hayagreeva's lap, representing prosperity, abundance, and auspiciousness. Together, they form a powerful union, bestowing devotees with both spiritual enlightenment and material well-being.

Symbolism and Iconography

The sculpture is rich in symbolic meaning. Hayagreeva is depicted seated majestically upon a multi-headed serpent (Naga), symbolizing the control over cosmic forces and the eternal cycle of creation and destruction. The serpent hood flares out behind him, forming a divine canopy, further emphasizing his supreme authority. He is shown in a seated posture, radiating serenity and power. Goddess Lakshmi, with her gentle demeanor, holds a lotus in one hand, symbolizing purity and spiritual growth, while the other hand is often depicted showering blessings or holding a lotus bud, representing new beginnings and fertility. The base of the sculpture rests upon a tortoise, representing the Earth and stability, signifying that the divine presence is firmly rooted in the material world, providing a foundation for spiritual and material growth.

Artistry of Swamimalai

The lost-wax casting method, Madhuchista Vidhana, is a time-honored tradition passed down through generations of artisans in Swamimalai. This meticulous process involves creating a clay model, coating it with wax to form a detailed replica, and then encasing it in another layer of clay. When fired, the wax melts and drains out, leaving a hollow mold. Molten bronze is then poured into this mold. Once cooled, the outer clay shell is broken, revealing the exquisite bronze casting. The artisans of Swamimalai are renowned for their ability to capture subtle expressions, fine details, and an unparalleled sense of divine grace in their metalwork, making each piece a unique work of art. This particular sculpture, with its dynamic pose and the harmonious depiction of the divine couple, is a testament to their skill and devotion.
