Evoked as Shivakami or Shivakamasundari- “she who brings desire in Shiva”, this aspect of Uma-Parvati is popularized by the bronze icons of the Chola period, a marvelous depiction of all that is beautiful in female form. This brass statue is a representation of the grace and splendor of Uma, who is the most beautiful female in three realms.

Standing in an elegant pose, Devi Parvati wears an elongated crown, earrings, necklaces, Yajnopavita, armlets, bracelets, and a silken dhoti (lower body garment) whose details are beautifully delineated in metal with incised lines. On the reverse, the Siraschakra (circular ornament on head, halo), tresses of Uma, and details of dhoti’s fine folds suggest a precision in sculpting, making this small statue a classic representation of the exquisiteness of Uma.

The Divine Presence of Goddess Uma

Behold the exquisite brass statue of Goddess Uma, also known as Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva and mother to the divine pantheon. Standing at twelve inches tall, this magnificent representation captures the essence of divine grace, strength, and maternal love. Crafted from fine brass, the statue exudes a warm, golden sheen, an enduring material that symbolizes prosperity and purity. The intricate detailing speaks of masterful craftsmanship, each element meticulously sculpted to bring forth the divine aura of the Goddess. The figure of Uma is depicted in a regal standing posture, her form adorned with elaborate jewelry that speaks of her noble status. From the finely worked earrings and necklaces to the bangles and anklets, every piece of ornamentation is rendered with remarkable precision. Her flowing dhoti, intricately pleated, drapes elegantly around her lower body, showcasing the artistry of ancient Indian sculptors. The serene yet powerful expression on her face, framed by her elaborate headdress, conveys a sense of profound peace and unwavering resolve, characteristic of Uma's multifaceted nature.

Symbolism and Spiritual Significance

Goddess Uma is revered as the Supreme Goddess in Shaivism, embodying Shakti, the primordial cosmic energy. She is the daughter of the mountain king Himavan and Mena, and her unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva led to their union. The lotus base upon which she stands is a potent symbol in Hinduism, representing purity, beauty, and spiritual awakening. The lotus emerges from the muddy depths, yet remains untainted, mirroring Uma’s own embodiment of divine purity amidst the worldly realm. Her posture, with one hand raised in a gesture of blessing and the other gracefully extended, signifies her benevolent nature and her readiness to bestow boons upon her devotees. In Hindu mythology, Uma is associated with numerous aspects of life. She is the goddess of fertility, love, beauty, and marriage, and is worshipped for marital bliss and the well-being of children. She is also a fierce protector, taking on the formidable form of Durga to vanquish evil or the formidable form of Kali to destroy ignorance. This dual nature—both nurturing and formidable—is a testament to the all-encompassing power of the divine feminine. This statue serves as a powerful reminder of these qualities, offering a focal point for prayer, meditation, and the invocation of auspiciousness in one's life. Its presence can imbue a home or sacred space with an atmosphere of devotion, serenity, and divine protection.
