With its five hoods flared protectively over Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, Sheshanag, the king of all serpents, stays coiled underneath the divine couple, offering his tail up as their residence. He is Adishesha, the first serpent, whose very movement dictates the state of the cosmos. As he uncoils, the movement of time is forward, leading to the creation of a new universe and when he tightens up again, it marks the destruction of the cosmos. With all of its power, he is an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, who is the sustainer of the cosmos. He is the Supreme Lord, whose Dashavataras maintain the balance of good and evil on the earth when the scales tip in the wrong direction. He is the restorer of Dharma. He holds the Sudarshana chakra in his right hand and his shanka (conch) in the other. While the discus gives him immense power, the conch is often used during auspicious events as a marker of its beginning. Goddess Lakshmi sits in his lap here, always with him no matter the era or the avatar. She, as the goddess of wealth and prosperity, blesses her devotees with all they could possibly need to survive and thrive. They, as the divine couple, are inseparable.

The Divine Embrace: Vishnu and Lakshmi on Sheshanaga

Immerse yourself in the divine presence of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, meticulously captured in this exquisite bronze statue. Crafted with the unparalleled artistry of the Hoysala period, this piece is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of South India. The statue depicts the supreme preserver, Lord Vishnu, seated serenely with his consort, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi, upon the coils of Sheshanaga, the cosmic serpent. This iconic representation symbolizes divine protection, eternal sustenance, and the auspicious union of spiritual and material well-being. The artistry of the Hoysala school is evident in every detail, from the intricate ornamentation adorning the divine figures to the fluid, dynamic form of Sheshanaga. The multi-headed serpent, a formidable symbol in Hindu mythology, forms a protective canopy, its scales rendered with remarkable precision. Sheshanaga, also known as Ananta, is often depicted as the couch upon which Lord Vishnu rests during the cosmic dissolution, symbolizing the infinite and the foundation of existence. His presence here signifies Vishnu's eternal dominion and the cosmic order he upholds.

Embodiment of Auspiciousness

Goddess Lakshmi, the embodiment of fortune, beauty, and abundance, sits gracefully in the lap of Lord Vishnu, exuding an aura of peace and benevolence. Her presence signifies prosperity, good luck, and the material comforts that are essential for a fulfilling life. The union of Vishnu and Lakshmi represents the harmonious balance between spiritual detachment and material prosperity, a core tenet of Hindu philosophy. Their divine embrace is a powerful reminder that true wealth lies not only in material possessions but also in spiritual contentment. The statue is crafted from Panchaloha, a sacred alloy of five metals believed to possess auspicious properties, further enhancing its spiritual significance. The warm, lustrous finish of the bronze brings to life the divine forms, inviting contemplation and devotion. Each detail, from the serene expressions of Vishnu and Lakshmi to the powerful yet graceful posture of Sheshanaga, has been rendered by skilled artisans, carrying forward traditions passed down through generations. This piece is not merely a decorative object but a spiritual artifact, a conduit for divine blessings and a beautiful representation of the profound narratives of Hindu mythology.
