Medicine Buddha or Bhaisajyaguru can heal a person’s body and mind with the tremendous vibration of his mantra. It is a natural propensity to believe that physical problems require physical treatments, yet Bhaisajyaguru’s teachings are thought to cure people through spiritual practices. His left hand carry a bowl of medicinal herbs, while his right-hand rests on his knee in varada mudra, holding the stem of a healing plant between his thumb and forefinger.

The enlightened one is seated on a plinth of lotus. A perfect erect spine, a silken robe is draped around his body. His garb is wreathed and bejewelled in strings of silver wires and precious jewels. Each feature of the Buddha's form and figure has been carved with the utmost precision and attention to detail. It is an exquisite amalgamation of filigree and inlay work coiled with Lapis and turquoise stone. He is gilded in amber gold and gems, which makes it a fine and rare piece for the collectables.

An Embodiment of Healing and Compassion

This exquisite brass statue captures the serene essence of the Medicine Buddha, also known as Bhaisajyaguru in Sanskrit, a revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism. The deity is depicted in a meditative pose, seated upon a richly adorned lotus throne. The traditional serene expression, with downcast eyes and a gentle smile, conveys profound peace and unwavering compassion. The intricate detailing of his robes, adorned with vibrant floral patterns in turquoise, lapis lazuli, and coral hues, speaks to the meticulous craftsmanship involved in its creation. Each tessera of inlay work is carefully placed, creating a dazzling display of color and texture that enhances the statue's spiritual aura.

The Physician of the World

In Mahayana Buddhist traditions, the Medicine Buddha is venerated as the supreme healer, the embodiment of all the Buddhas' healing powers. Legends tell of his twelve vows, made before his enlightenment, to liberate all sentient beings from suffering, especially from illness and the hindrances that obstruct spiritual progress. He is often depicted holding a bowl of medicinal nectar in his left hand and a sprig of the arura tree (also known as the "king of medicines") in his right. This symbolism represents his power to cure all physical and mental ailments and to guide practitioners towards enlightenment, freeing them from the cycle of rebirth and suffering. The presence of this statue is believed to bring blessings of health, longevity, and spiritual well-being.

Artistry and Devotion

Handmade in India, this statue is a testament to centuries of artisanal skill and profound devotion. The use of brass as the base material lends a timeless quality and durability, while the elaborate inlay work transforms it into a true work of art. The combination of the warm metallic sheen of the brass with the cool, vibrant colors of the inlaid stones creates a visually captivating piece. The lotus throne, a symbol of purity and spiritual awakening, is itself a canvas of intricate patterns and decorative elements, further amplifying the statue's majestic presence. Owning such a piece is not merely acquiring an object of beauty, but inviting the benevolent presence of the Medicine Buddha into your sacred space, fostering an atmosphere of peace, healing, and spiritual growth.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
