Embodiment of Compassion and Wisdom

This exquisite brass statue portrays Chenrezig, known as Avalokiteśvara in Sanskrit, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. In Tibetan Buddhism, he is revered as the patron deity of Tibet and is believed to embody the compassion of all Buddhas. The Shadakshari form, with its four arms and serene countenance, is a powerful representation of his boundless loving-kindness and wisdom. This particular depiction is a testament to the rich artistic traditions of India, where skilled artisans have meticulously brought this divine form to life through traditional craftsmanship.

A Visual Symphony of Devotion

The radiant brass material serves as the canvas for this divine artistry, further enhanced by intricate inlay work. The vestments of the deity are adorned with vibrant tessellations of turquoise and coral hues, symbolizing purity, spiritual growth, and the transformative power of love. The rich red of the lower garment evokes vitality and the earthly realm, while the striking blue signifies the wisdom that transcends worldly attachments. The multiple arms, a characteristic feature of Chenrezig in his Shadakshari form, are held in various mudras (symbolic hand gestures). The two principal hands are clasped in Anjali Mudra, signifying prayer and devotion, the very essence of his compassionate vow. The remaining arms hold symbolic objects: one grasps a mala, representing the continuous cycle of recitation and prayer for the benefit of all sentient beings, and the other cradles a lotus flower, a symbol of purity and enlightenment rising above the muddy waters of samsara.

Myths and Symbolism

Legend tells that Chenrezig wept tears of compassion for all suffering beings, and from these tears sprang forth the Avalokiteśvara who vowed to remain in existence until all beings are liberated from suffering. This intricate statue captures that profound commitment. The serene expression on the deity's face, with eyes gently closed in meditation, radiates peace and understanding, inviting the viewer to contemplate their own path towards compassion and enlightenment. The ornate crown and jewelry further signify his celestial nature and the high spiritual realization he has attained.

A Legacy of Indian Craftsmanship

Each element of this statue speaks of dedication and skill passed down through generations. The detailed carving, the precise placement of each inlay stone, and the overall balance and harmony of the form are indicative of the masterful craftsmanship inherent in Indian artistry. This piece is not merely a decorative object but a conduit for spiritual connection, a tangible reminder of the Bodhisattva's benevolent presence and an invitation to cultivate compassion in one's own life. This handmade creation from India is a unique and meaningful addition to any spiritual space or art collection.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
