“Buddhamatrika Mahamayuri” (the great peacock mother of the Buddha), is a powerful and lesser-known Vajrayana deity, one of the Pancharaksha or five-protector goddesses in Nepal. In essence, Mahamayuri is the manifestation of the powerful mantras formulated by the Buddha for the protection of beings against the poison of snakes, ill-omen, and unforseen dangers. She is also a bestower of fertility and rain and is revered as a bringer of fortune. Though described in her references as the “godmother” or “mother” of the Buddha, the embodiment of all his powers, and the knower of his esoteric wisdom, Mahamayuri’s sculptures and paintings are rare to find.

This brass face mask of Mahamayuri thus becomes a one-of-a-kind and artistically rich piece from Nepal. Crafted with finesse, the mask represents Mahamayuri adorned with ethereal ornaments and identified by the peacock or Mayura emblem on her crown. The elaborate hairdo of Mahamayuri has been adorned by a Garuda in the front and two parrots on each side- both the birds a form of Buddha in his previous births according to the Jatakas.

The neatly braided hair of Mahamayuri frames her youthful face exquisitely, marked by the three eyes and the tranquil gaze of the goddess. In her ears, Mahamayuri wears fishes, symbols of auspiciousness and one of the Ashtamangala in Buddhism, and her neck is adorned with a floral chain and two dragons, mythical creatures that are the materialization of the force and unbounded power of Enlightenment.

Embodiment of Protection and Serenity

This exquisite brass statue, meticulously crafted in Nepal, depicts the benevolent Buddhist goddess Mahamayuri, also known as the Great Peacock Princess. She is a prominent figure within the Pancharaksha, a group of five female deities invoked for protection. Mahamayuri is revered as the embodiment of protective mantras, a powerful ward against illness, poison, and all forms of malevolent influence. Her presence is a source of spiritual solace and a symbol of the serene power of divine compassion.

Symbolism of the Peacock and Serpents

The iconography of Mahamayuri is rich with symbolic meaning, directly reflected in this stunning representation. Her most recognizable attribute is the peacock, which adorns her headdress and extends its magnificent fanned tail upwards. The peacock is a symbol of wisdom, beauty, and resurrection in many cultures, and in Buddhism, it represents the overcoming of delusions and the attainment of enlightenment. The colorful plumage and the "eyes" on its tail are said to ward off evil spirits and negative energies, mirroring Mahamayuri's protective role. The serpents that entwine around her shoulders and the base further deepen the symbolism. In Buddhism, serpents (nagas) can represent both the enlightened mind and the obstacles that must be overcome on the path to spiritual realization. They are also associated with healing and the potent force of transformation. Here, their coiled forms, with their alert heads, suggest a vigilant guardianship, their power harnessed by the goddess for the benefit of devotees. The smaller birds perched around her, adding to the intricate detail, can be seen as messengers or aspects of her divine presence, further amplifying her protective aura.

Artistry and Cultural Heritage

This statue is a testament to the rich artistic traditions of Nepal, renowned for its skilled metalwork and deep spiritual heritage. The brass has been worked with remarkable precision, capturing the delicate features of the goddess's face, her serene expression, and the intricate details of her adornments. The patina of the brass speaks of age and devotion, lending an aura of authenticity and timelessness. Each element, from the flowing curls of her hair to the textured scales of the serpents and the individual feathers of the peacock, has been rendered with a deep understanding of iconography and aesthetic appeal. Owning such a piece is not merely acquiring a decorative object, but welcoming a conduit of spiritual energy and a connection to centuries of Buddhist artistry and devotion.
