Nestled against the great Northwestern desert, Gujarat is the starting point of the Indian west coast. It is the state of Kutch and Gir - thick marshes and matchless white deserts, and the lush rainforests that is the home of the virile Indian lion. Despite being one of the most industrialised and agriculturally developed states in the country, Gujarat has retained the charm of the ancient Indian world in terms of, say, fashion and way of life, of which the dolls you see on this page are the very picture.

They belong to a well-heeled Gujarati farming family. He is wearing the traditional balloon-trousers of the menfolk, with a flowing long-sleeved shirt. Made from pure homegrown cotton, such an attire is best suited to the warm, temperate climate of the region. On his head is a bright yellow turban and a chunky silver coil around his neck, a popular item of jewellery with the men. The close-fitted jooties and the imposing moustache complete the image of the patriarch.

His wife is clad in a dark green saree dyed bandhani style, a fashionable tie-dye method perfected in the region. She has drawn the endpiece of her saree over her head in the presence of her husband, from beneath which one could make out the ample gold on her person.

Embracing Tradition

These exquisite figurines offer a glimpse into the vibrant tapestry of Gujarati culture. More than mere dolls, they represent a celebration of heritage, meticulously handcrafted to embody the essence of a married couple from this western Indian state. The figures are constructed of papier mache and are hand painted. Every detail, from the intricate attire to the expressive faces, speaks volumes about the rich traditions and customs of Gujarat. These pieces are more than decoration, they are embodiments of love and family.

The Garments of Gujarat

The male figure stands tall, adorned in the traditional attire of a Gujarati groom. His distinctive headwear, known as a turban, is a symbol of honor and respect. The meticulous folds and vibrant colors of the fabric are a testament to the artisan's skill and attention to detail. The flowing upper garment complements his equally detailed lower garment, all in a crisp white. Intricate details of the collar, shoulders, and his necklace create an impression of a man of elevated standing. The female figure embodies the grace and elegance of a Gujarati bride. Her vibrant sari, draped in a traditional style, drapes around her as an indication of sophistication. The fine embroidery, the delicate patterns, and the rich colors of red, yellow, and green together demonstrate the region’s well known textile arts. Her jewelry, from the shimmering earrings to the delicate necklace, further accentuate her beauty and symbolize her marital status. The bindi, a red dot on her forehead, signifies her auspicious position as a married woman, invoking the blessings of Goddess Parvati for a prosperous and harmonious union.

Symbolism and Significance

The tradition of representing deities and figures through art forms in India has ancient roots, deeply intertwined with religious beliefs and cultural practices. These dolls echo that artistic tradition, encapsulating the essence of Gujarati identity. They remind us of the tales from the Puranas, where divine couples like Shiva and Parvati are revered as symbols of eternal love and marital harmony. More than just representations of individuals, these dolls represent the ideals of family, tradition, and cultural identity. They serve as a reminder of the values and customs that have been passed down through generations, connecting individuals to their roots and fostering a sense of belonging. Each doll stands on a sturdy wooden plinth. These dolls are perfect display pieces.
