Ganesha: Lore and Legend

The stories of Ganesha are as varied and colourful as the festivals celebrated in his honour. One popular tale recounts how Ganesha acquired his elephant head. According to legend, Parvati, his mother, created him from the sandalwood paste she used for bathing. When Shiva, her husband, returned home, Ganesha, unaware of Shiva’s identity, prevented him from entering. In a fit of rage, Shiva severed Ganesha's head. Parvati was inconsolable, and Shiva, filled with remorse, promised to restore Ganesha to life. He instructed his followers to bring the head of the first being they encountered facing north. They returned with the head of an elephant, which Shiva then placed upon Ganesha's body, thus reviving him. Another iconic story explains Ganesha's broken tusk. During the writing of the epic Mahabharata, Ganesha agreed to be the scribe for the sage Vyasa. However, he stipulated that his pen could not stop. As Vyasa dictated at an incredible pace, Ganesha's pen broke. To ensure the writing continued uninterrupted, Ganesha broke off one of his tusks and used it as a pen. This act symbolizes his willingness to make sacrifices for knowledge and wisdom. These are just a few glimpses into the rich tapestry of myths and legends surrounding Ganesha, making this statue not just an art object, but a potent symbol of cultural significance.
