Deepalakshmi is a traditional lamp with an image of a lady holding a Diya; it is also known as a Pavai diya or Vilaku Lakshmi. This style of Diya is claimed to have been very popular under the Pandya kingdom. These Diyas were meant to light the path to a temple or a particular god. The main element of the lamp is a standing lady holding a diya. She is represented in lavish clothes, signifying her position as a fortune-bringer. Her hairstyle, the breast belt, and the tribhanga posture signify that she is the carrier of the ancient iconography of celestial maidens. She is holding a modest Diya with a single wick. This Diya is typically purchased in pairs and is suitable for placing opposite a god picture. This brass Deeplakshmi is also unique because it is painted in the antique finish of brown and green patina, thus making it look like an item from the bygone era.

Embodiment of Light and Auspiciousness

This exquisite brass Deepalakshmi statue is more than just a decorative piece; it is a tangible representation of divine grace and the illuminating power of light, deeply rooted in Indian culture and tradition. The figure of Deepalakshmi, the goddess of lamps, is a cherished deity whose presence is believed to dispel darkness, both literal and metaphorical, ushering in prosperity, knowledge, and good fortune. Crafted with meticulous detail and traditional artistry from high-quality brass, this handmade masterpiece hails from India, a land renowned for its rich heritage of skilled craftsmanship in metalwork.

Symbolism and Divine Companionship

The Deepalakshmi stands elegantly, her posture conveying a sense of serene readiness to hold the lamp, a vessel for divine radiance. The intricate carvings adorning her traditional attire, from the ornate jewelry to the finely etched patterns on her garments, speak volumes about the artistry involved. Adding a touch of whimsical charm and deeper symbolic meaning, a parrot perches gently on her shoulder. In Hindu mythology, parrots are often associated with communication, wisdom, and the transmission of knowledge. Their presence alongside the goddess of light suggests that illumination brings forth clarity of thought and the ability to share wisdom. This imagery evokes tales where divine beings are often depicted with celestial companions, signifying their connection to the natural world and the abundance of life.

A Beacon of Tradition and Craftsmanship

The very act of lighting a lamp in Hindu rituals, known as "Diya jalana," is profoundly significant. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. This Deepalakshmi statue is designed to be a focal point for such sacred practices, an enduring reminder of these timeless values. The warm, lustrous hue of the brass enhances the spiritual aura of the deity, making it a captivating addition to any home or sacred space. Whether placed in a puja room, a living area, or a meditation corner, this statue serves as a constant source of inspiration and a beautiful testament to the enduring legacy of Indian artisanal traditions. It is a piece that transcends mere ornamentation, offering a connection to ancient rituals and profound spiritual significance.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
