The slender-bodied veenadharini is seated on the belly of a gigantic lotus bloom. In Nepalese-Buddhist iconography, the lotus flower is ubiquitous as a symbol of compassion and serenity and all that is sattvik (imbued with the quality of stability). The murti that you see on this page is the Nepalese roopa (form) of Devi Sarasvati.

Note the marked Buddhist-style influences in this sculpture. The contemplative, sharp-featured face and the elaborate spire of the crown on Her head. Long karnakundalas grazing the zenith of the Devi’s superb clavicles. Long, lithe proportion of form, from the miniscule digits of hands and feet to the overall silhouette of Her figure.

Sculpted from pure brass, this bitone Sarasvati murti is predominated by a textured black colour, the complexion of Her bare body. A flaxen gold colour defines Her embroidered dhoti, the numerous adornments on Her body, and the swan-shaped head of Her veena (swan is the vahana or divine mount of Devi Sarasvati).

The Embodiment of Wisdom and Artistry

This exquisite brass sculpture captures the divine essence of Saraswati, the revered Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, art, wisdom, and learning. Revered across Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, Saraswati is often depicted as a serene figure, the source of all creative arts and sciences. In this remarkable Nepalese rendition, her grace and divine attributes are brought to life through meticulous craftsmanship. She is seated in a tranquil pose, her form radiating an aura of profound wisdom and artistic inspiration. –––––––––––––––––––

A Symphony of Divine Presence

The goddess is shown in the act of playing the veena, a stringed instrument symbolizing her dominion over music and melody. Her fingers are poised delicately on the strings, suggesting the creation of celestial harmonies. The veena itself is rendered with intricate detail, from its curved body to the tuning pegs, representing the nuances of musical expression. The serene expression on her face, with downcast eyes, hints at deep contemplation and inner peace, qualities associated with profound knowledge. Her ornate headdress and the subtle adornments speak to the grandeur and divine nature of this celebrated goddess. –––––––––––––––––––

Artistic Heritage and Cultural Significance

Crafted in brass, a material revered for its durability and ability to capture fine detail, this statue is a testament to the rich artistic traditions of Nepal. Nepalese art, influenced by both Hindu and Buddhist aesthetics, often features a unique blend of devotional fervor and exquisite artistry. Saraswati, known as Yangchenma in Tibetan Buddhism, is a significant figure in the Himalayan pantheon, invoked for clarity of mind, eloquence, and artistic talent. This piece embodies the spiritual and cultural heritage of the region, making it not just an object of devotion but also a significant work of art. The intricate patterns adorning her lower garment further highlight the skill of the artisans who brought this divine form into being. –––––––––––––––––––

A Symbol of Enlightenment and Creativity

In various myths, Saraswati is said to have sprung from the forehead of Lord Brahma, the creator, to assist him in his endeavors. She is often associated with the white swan, her mount, symbolizing purity and grace, and with the lotus flower, representing spiritual awakening and enlightenment. This representation invites contemplation on the interconnectedness of knowledge, art, and spirituality, reminding us of the pursuit of wisdom and the beauty of creative expression. This magnificent statue serves as a powerful reminder of the goddess's blessings, bringing inspiration, wisdom, and artistic flair into any space it graces.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
