The Devi-roopa (sacred feminine manifestation) that you see on this page is a composite of many images. The image of the wrathful simhavahini, with all the aggression contained in the presence of the lion mount. The image of the compassionate mother, cradling Her little son, Ganesha, on Her lap. Most importantly, the image of the beauteous and versatile feminine.

Wife of Shiva, mother of Ganesha. This part-Parvati-part-Durga murti is carved from wood, in keeping with the aesthetics of traditional South Indian temple architecture. The deep crimson flush of Her bodily complexion and the imposing Kirtimukham motif at the zenith of the archway above Her head, give it away.

The ivory-coloured body of Ganesha contrasts sharply with His mother’s. The leonine ochre of the vahana adds to the palette of basic pastels that complete the composition. A high, variedly engraved plinth and layered, lotus petal aureole frame the divine simhavahini Mother with Her child.

The Divine Maternal Embrace: A Wooden Icon of Power and Grace

This magnificent wooden sculpture captures the essence of maternal divinity, featuring the powerful Goddess Parvati seated gracefully upon her vahana, the mighty lion, with her beloved son, Bal Ganesha, nestled beside her. Carved with meticulous detail and adorned with a vibrant, time-worn patina, this artwork is more than just a decorative piece; it is a portal to the rich tapestry of Hindu mythology and devotion.

Goddess Parvati: The Cosmic Mother

Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, embodies a multitude of divine attributes. She is the mother goddess, the creator, preserver, and destroyer, a force of nature in her own right. In this depiction, she radiates serene strength and gentle authority. Her posture, seated upon the lion, signifies her dominion over power and courage. The lion, often depicted as a symbol of raw strength and aggression, is tamed and subservient to the divine mother, representing her ability to control and channel even the most formidable energies. In Hindu lore, Parvati is often depicted in various forms, from the gentle Uma to the fierce Durga, each representing a different aspect of the divine feminine. This portrayal captures her benevolent yet all-powerful nature, a protector and nurturer of the universe.

Bal Ganesha: The Auspicious Beginnings

Beside his divine mother sits the beloved elephant-headed deity, Bal Ganesha, in his youthful form. Ganesha is revered as the remover of obstacles, the god of wisdom, and the patron of arts and sciences. His presence alongside Parvati signifies auspicious beginnings, good fortune, and the blessings of a mother's love. In his childlike innocence, he adds a touch of tender charm to the powerful presence of his mother and her lion. The legends of Ganesha are numerous, from his creation by Parvati to his pivotal role in gaining wisdom and overcoming challenges. His inclusion here underscores the importance of family, protection, and the promise of a blessed path ahead. ––––––––––––––––––––

Craftsmanship and Cultural Significance

This striking sculpture is expertly carved from wood, a medium that has been used for sacred art in India for millennia. The intricate detailing in the headdresses, jewelry, and the flowing garments speaks to the skill of the artisans. The vibrant colors, though softened by age, bring the figures to life, imbuing the piece with a sense of spiritual energy and historical depth. Such wooden carvings are a significant part of South Indian artistic traditions, often found in temples and homes, serving as focal points for prayer and meditation. The arching backdrop, reminiscent of temple toranas or decorative mandapams, further enhances the sacred aura of the composition. This piece is a testament to the enduring legacy of Indian craftsmanship and the profound spiritual narratives that continue to inspire and guide countless devotees.

A Sacred Centerpiece for Your Space

Imagine this resplendent sculpture gracing your home. It serves as a powerful reminder of divine protection, maternal love, and the removal of obstacles. The harmonious union of Parvati, Ganesha, and the lion creates a compelling visual narrative that resonates with spiritual seekers and art enthusiasts alike. This piece is not merely an object but a sacred presence, capable of transforming any space into a sanctuary of peace, prosperity, and divine grace.
