The Vishnu panel sculpture that you see on this page is an authentic example of South Indian craftsmanship. Given the style and the iconography, it is as if a sliver broken off the vaults of an ancient regional temple. Carved from wood, it depicts the fair Lord Vishnu. He is flanked by Bhoodevi and Shreedevi, His wives and Lakshmi-roopas.
Lord Vishnu is seated on a gigantic lotus-shaped throne. He shares it with His wives, who are seated on either edge. Grand pillars rise behind them, above which is a multi-tiered archway engraved with lotus petals. These details make this longline panel a makeshift Vishnu temple, with all the architectural glamour of yore.
The ensemble described heretofore is held in place by a pair of mythical nara. Separated by a pillar rich with coloured motifs, they resemble Vishnu in their devotion and have assumed a dancing stance, such that they mirror each other.
