According to a folktale from the Indian states of Gujrat and Rajasthan, Khodiyar Mata was the daughter of the snake realm's king, the Naga, who assumed the form of a human named Janabai to fulfill Mamaniya Gadhvi's longing for progeny. When one of her siblings during her time on Earth was bitten by a venomous snake, Khodiyar Mata (then Janbai) traveled to the Naglok to bring Amrita, a drink with life-giving properties in Hindu mythology.

Janbai suffered injuries to her legs during her journey, which caused her to walk with a limp. As a result of her selfless deed, Janbai was given the name Khodiyar Mata (khodi meaning limp). In this brass statue, Khodiyar Mata is presented with her crocodile mount, holding a trident, dressed in the traditional attire of Gujarat and Rajasthan, with her hand in the gesture of fearlessness.
