In a fit of rage, Hiranyakashipu struck a pillar, asking if Vishnu resided within it. It was then, at twilight (neither day nor night), on the threshold of his palace (neither inside nor outside), that Vishnu manifested as Narasimha, a being neither man nor beast, and placed Hiranyakashipu on his lap (neither earth nor sky) and disemboweled the demon king, thus fulfilling the conditions of the boon while destroying evil and protecting his devotee.
