The dotting and ever-auspicious son of Shiva and Parvati in the Hindu universe is an eternally divine presence. In the culture of Newar (Nepal), he assumes the role of a protector, guarding the life and wealth of the devotees. In this brass statue from Nepal however, Ganesha is ornamented with attributes characteristic of Krishna- Mayura pankh mukuta (crown of peacock feather), juda (hairdo), langot (short dhoti), and paayal (anklet), along with a charming childlike innocence, seen in Baal-Krishna (baby Krishna) statues.

Baal-Ganesha or baby Ganesha lies on an ovular base, with his buttocks charmingly raised and his lovely face resting on his hands, suggesting a peaceful nap of a toddler. A beautiful symbol of cultural exchange between India and Nepal and between Ganesha and Krishna, this Nepalese statue is a one-of-a-kind artwork.
