6'' Lord Narasimha with Goddess Lakshmi | Madhuchista Vidhana (Lost-Wax) | Panchaloha Bronze from Swamimalai

$431
Includes any tariffs and taxes

One of the most fearsome deities in the Hindu pantheon of gods – one deigned to be the destroyer of the entire universe during its ‘mahapralaya’ – this god of destruction is the avatar of Vishnu, Narasimha. Part lion and part human, Narasimha’s anthropomorphic form’s destructive capabilities serve the end of restoring dharma and end calamity. For that reason, his manifestation is Kala, Mahakala, and Prakala – time, great-time, and beyond time.

This ‘panchaloha’ bronze work executed in the ‘madhuchista vidhana’ or the lost-wax manner portrays the great protector in a relaxed yet sublime manner, seated on a lotus throne in the ‘lalitasana.’ The four-armed sculptural image carries the usual attributes associated with Vishnu – we have the ‘shankha’ or conch, the weapon ‘sudarshan chakra,’ and with the remaining hands we see one raised in the ‘abhayamudra’ fear-dispelling posture and the other kept around Lakshmi’s waist. Lakshmi, as Narasimha’s consort, is seen holding a lotus in her right hand, which symbolises ‘karma,’ consciousness, knowledge, and reality.

The conscious and skilful effort of the ‘sthapati’ is further visible in the manner that Narasimha’s fingers are presented, which are clawed, representing Narasimha’s lion form.

Narasimha’s legend is largely presented with the defeat of the demon Hiranyakashipu. Vishnu took the form of Narasimha to defeat the demon who had a boon that allowed him not to be killed during the day or night, by man or animal, inside the house or outside, on land or in the heavens. Narasimha’s protection is also extended to his faithful devotee Prahalad, whose tyrannical father is the demon himself
