The literal meaning of Bhumisparsha mudra is "touching the earth." It is sometimes referred to as the "earth witness" mudra. This body position, or mudra, honours a few significant events in the life of the Buddha and has particular significance. Shakyamuni Buddha is depicted in this mudra, his right hand held like a pendant over his right knee, extending towards the ground and touching the lotus seat with his palm facing inward. It also symbolises the point in time at which the Buddha awakens and declares the world to be the proof of his enlightenment.

The Earth Witnessing Enlightenment

This exquisite brass statue captures the pivotal moment of Lord Buddha's enlightenment, embodied in the profound Bhumisparsha Mudra. The term "Bhumisparsha" translates to "touching the earth," a gesture deeply symbolic in Buddhist tradition. It signifies the moment Siddhartha Gautama, as the Buddha, called upon the earth goddess to witness his unwavering resolve against the temptations and distractions of Mara, the embodiment of illusion and desire. In this powerful stance, his right hand rests on his knee, fingertips pointing downwards, touching the ground, while his left hand rests in his lap. This mudra is not merely a posture; it is a visual narrative of courage, steadfastness, and the ultimate triumph of wisdom over ignorance.

Artistry and Craftsmanship

Handcrafted with meticulous care in India, this idol is cast in brass, a material revered for its durability and lustrous finish. The dual-toned effect, achieved through a masterful interplay of patinas, lends the statue an authentic, antique aesthetic. The rich, dark tones of the bronze highlight the intricate details of Buddha's robes, his serene facial features, and the elaborate detailing of the lotus pedestal. In contrast, the golden accents on the sanghati (robe) and the base add a touch of opulence and divine radiance. The urna, the auspicious mark on Buddha's forehead, and the ushnisha, the cranial protuberance symbolizing his wisdom, are rendered with subtle yet striking detail, inviting contemplation. The lotus throne itself is adorned with motifs that speak to the sacred geometry and symbolism prevalent in Indian art and philosophy.

A Symbol of Inner Peace and Wisdom

Possessing this statue is more than acquiring an object of art; it is inviting a powerful symbol of peace, compassion, and enlightenment into your space. The Bhumisparsha Mudra is a constant reminder that even in the face of adversity, inner strength and unwavering determination can lead to profound spiritual awakening. It serves as an anchor for meditation, a focal point for reflection, and a beacon of spiritual aspiration. The serene expression on Buddha's face, the gentle posture, and the grounding gesture all contribute to an aura of tranquility that can permeate any environment, fostering a sense of calm and mindfulness. This piece is a testament to the enduring legacy of Buddhist art and philosophy, brought to life through the skilled hands of Indian artisans.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
