Deity Details

Seated in the lotus position atop a tiger skin, Shiva exudes tranquility even as he holds emblems of his immense power. One hand holds the trident, or Trishul, a symbol of his control over the three worlds: heaven, earth, and the netherworld. Emblazoned below the trident is Om, a powerful Hindu mantra. The Damaru, a small drum, rests in another hand, its rhythmic beats believed to be the origin of language and the rhythm of creation itself. The snake coiled around his neck symbolizes kundalini energy and Shiva's mastery over desires. The third eye on his forehead, usually closed, has the power to unleash destructive fire when opened, representing Shiva's ability to burn away illusion and ignorance. Intricate inlay work adorns Shiva’s attire, adding a richness and depth to this sacred depiction.

The Tiger Skin Seat

Shiva is often depicted seated or standing on a tiger skin, a symbol of power and detachment. Legend says that Shiva, wandering naked in the forests, was approached by sages who sought to test him. These sages used their powers to invoke a tiger to attack Shiva. Shiva calmly killed the tiger, skinned it, and used it as a mat. This act symbolizes Shiva's victory over primal instincts and his mastery over nature. The tiger skin represents conquering the ego, desires, and the animalistic qualities within oneself, allowing for spiritual liberation.
