Shiva in the Nepal valley is a popular divinity, worshipped by the Newars as the protector of their home and the eternal god- Adideva. Kathmandu Valley boasts many Shaiva shrines, including the powerful Pashupatinath temple, where Shiva resides in one of the most potent forms. This brass Shiva Linga from Nepal is a symbol of Shiva’s timeless reign on the culture of Nepal. Made with ritually sacred brass, the Shiva Lingam has been crafted traditionally, with the Lingam marked with the Tripunda, emerging from the Vedi or base placed on an inverted lotus platform.

The lowermost part of the Lingam has been shaped like a Yantra, adding an element of sacred geometry to the Lingam. A five-hooded serpent shades the Lingam, sculpted in a way that reminds one of dragons, a mythical creature of significance in Buddhism, highlighting the exchange of iconography between Hinduism and Buddhism in Nepalese art. With incised lines, Bilva patra or leaves of Bel tree are etched on the upper part of the Lingam, an imperishable offering of the devoted hands that sculpted the Lingam.

An Emblem of Divine Power and Protection

This exquisite brass representation of the Shiva Linga, originating from the sacred lands of Nepal, embodies a profound spiritual significance. The Shiva Linga is not merely an idol but a powerful symbol representing the formless, all-pervading cosmic energy that is the creative force of the universe. It is the primordial form of Lord Shiva, the destroyer and transformer, whose energy encompasses all existence. The intricate craftsmanship of this piece speaks volumes of the artisans' dedication and skill. The lustrous brass, a metal revered for its purity and auspiciousness in Hindu traditions, has been sculpted into a form that evokes reverence and awe. The smooth, cylindrical form of the linga itself represents Shiva's infinite, unchanging nature. It is often seen as the pillar of light that Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu once tried to measure, only to realize the boundless nature of the divine.

The Serpent's Embrace: Kundalini and Cosmic Consciousness

Encircling the base of the linga, a magnificent serpent with multiple heads rises, its form skillfully rendered in brass. This serpent is none other than the divine Naga, often depicted as an embodiment of Kundalini energy, the dormant cosmic serpent power that resides within all beings. In Hindu mythology, the Naga is also associated with protection, wisdom, and immortality. Lord Shiva himself is often depicted adorned with serpents, symbolizing his mastery over the primal forces of existence and his transcendence of ego and material attachment. The multiple heads of the serpent can represent its omnipresence and its ability to guard the divine. The presence of the Naga coiled around the Shiva Linga signifies the awakening of spiritual energy and its union with the supreme consciousness. It is a reminder that within each individual lies the potential for divine awakening and profound transformation, mirroring the cosmic dance of creation and destruction orchestrated by Lord Shiva.
