The Embodiment of Compassion

This exquisitely crafted brass sculpture depicts Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, surrounded by cosmic Buddhas and crowned by the Svayambhunath Stupa. Avalokiteshvara embodies the boundless compassion of all Buddhas, vowing to postpone his own enlightenment until all beings are freed from suffering. This commitment to alleviating suffering makes him one of the most widely revered Bodhisattvas in the Buddhist pantheon. In various Buddhist traditions, Avalokiteshvara is considered the earthly manifestation of Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light. Legends recount his origin from a ray of light emanating from Amitabha's right eye, a testament to his inseparable connection to the celestial Buddha. His presence symbolizes the accessibility of enlightenment and the power of compassion to transform even the most difficult circumstances. Avalokiteshvara is often depicted with many arms and heads, symbolizing his ability to perceive and respond to the needs of all beings simultaneously. While this sculpture does not portray the multi-armed form, it captures the essence of his compassionate nature and his commitment to guiding all sentient beings toward liberation. The gentle expression on his face radiates peace and understanding, inviting viewers to connect with their own innate capacity for compassion.

A Celestial Assembly

Surrounding Avalokiteshvara are miniature representations of cosmic Buddhas and other Bodhisattvas, each radiating their own unique energy and wisdom. These celestial figures represent the various aspects of enlightenment and the diverse paths to liberation. Their presence reinforces the idea that Avalokiteshvara is not alone in his mission of compassion, but rather part of a vast network of enlightened beings dedicated to the well-being of all. Atop the sculpture rests a representation of the Svayambhunath Stupa, one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Nepal. Legend says that the Kathmandu Valley was once a lake, and the self-existent (Svayambhu) flame arose from a lotus at the center. This flame became the Svayambhunath Stupa, a symbol of the primordial Buddha and the source of all enlightenment. The presence of the Stupa atop this sculpture serves as a reminder of the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice: to awaken to one's own true nature and realize the inherent potential for enlightenment. The overall composition of the sculpture creates a sense of harmony and balance, reflecting the interconnectedness of all beings and the importance of compassion in achieving spiritual awakening. Each element is meticulously crafted, demonstrating the skill and dedication of the artisan who brought this sacred image to life. This piece serves not only as a beautiful work of art, but also as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of compassion and the potential for enlightenment within us all.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
