Brahma took the form of a swan and flew upwards, while Vishnu became a boar and burrowed downwards. Neither could find the pillar's origin. It was then that Shiva revealed himself from within the fiery Lingam, proclaiming his supreme existence and emphasizing the futility of ego and the importance of understanding the absolute reality. The Lingam, therefore, became a symbol of Shiva's formless, all-pervading nature and his ultimate supremacy.
