This pair of elephants looks strong and majestic. The long over-cloth, intricately carved adds to the effect. They seem all decked up to take the emperor for a ride through the city streets. The movement of the pachyderms is shown by the placement of their limbs. The body is bulky and the overcloth adds volume to it. The elephants raise their trunk to make it look like the hood of a serpent. However, the trunk of an elephant has phallic interpretations and here, it being similar to a hooded snake links it to Shiva. By showing one broken tusk, the craftsman shows connection with the elephant headed god Ganesha.
The pair of elephants is small in size but gigantic in aesthetic value. Polished in green, the sheen of brass peep out from places, giving it an antique appearance.
