Majestic Dhumra Varahi in Granite from Mahabalipuram

$48,300
Includes any tariffs and taxes

Statue Size: 110 Inches, and Base Size: 24 Inches

Rising to an imposing height of over 10 feet, this colossal granite image of Varahi commands space with the authority befitting one of the Sapta Matrikas and the shakti of Varaha.

Granite, long favored in South Indian temple architecture and sculpture, is a material of permanence and endurance. Its density and resilience demand technical mastery, and its very hardness becomes a metaphor for divine steadfastness.

In this sculpture, the dark tonality of the stone deepens the presence of the goddess, aligning with Varahi’s association with earth, subterranean energies, and protective ferocity, and her dark hued form as Dhumra-Varahi. The subdued grey black surface absorbs light, lending her a powerful gravity and reinforcing her tantric character as a guardian deity.

Varahi’s boar visage is sculpted with measured clarity. The elongated snout, alert eyes, and subtly incised tilak articulate both animal strength and divine intelligence. Her crown rises in tiered precision, echoing temple superstructures and affirming her sovereignty. Makara earrings, layered necklaces, and ornate breast band enrich the iconographic vocabulary, while the ornamentation remains harmoniously integrated into the robust granite form.

The goddess is seated in a composed lalitasana, one leg folded and the other pendant, embodying controlled power. The attributes in her hands reinforce her martial and protective identity, with weapons that signify the destruction of adharma and the safeguarding of cosmic order. The raised hand in abhaya assures refuge. Varahi is enthroned upon a lotus, emblem of transcendence rising from earthly depths, while the inverted lotus beneath forms a secondary throne, grounding her energy in the material realm.

The sculpting of her body is volumetric and assured. The torso is full yet disciplined, the waist gently defined, and the garment rendered with crisply incised pleats that soften the granite’s severity. Through disciplined iconometry and material control, the sculpture achieves both monumental solidity and devotional intimacy.
