According to the Vedas, the Supreme Lord Narayana (''One who resides in water''), also known as Vishnu, reclines on the cosmic serpent Ananta, who symbolizes eternity. The Lord awakens cyclically to initiate the creative process through Brahma Ji, the creator god who emerges from Vishnu's navel. Such an image is particularly valuable for Vaishnavas, in whose Pancharatra Texts, the Lord is said to sleep on the serpent, which lies in the cosmic ocean, with one of His legs in the lap of Goddess Lakshmi, who diligently tends to her Lord. Here in addition to the usual iconography, we see a profusion of lotus buds marking the background.
