Rajarajeshvari Bronze Sculpture - Richly Adorned Hoysala Artwork

NZ$1684

Devi Rajarajeshvari is the Devi of beauty and femininity. She is the purely aesthetic roopa (manifestation) of Devi Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva, and is known by various names indicative of this quality such as Devi Tripura Sundari and Devi Lalita. The murti that you see on this page captures Devi Rajarajeshvari’s beauty with a great deal of skill and shraddha. Indeed, the precision and symmetry that characterise this work, despite the proportion of often miniscule detail, is proof of the ethereal quality in the sculptor’s work.

It is a fine example of the rich bronze tradition of the South. Devi Rajarajeshvari is seated in lalitasana upon an inverted lotus asana (seat). The same is poised upon a multilayered quadrilateral pedestal with numerous engravings. Together with the Yali brackets, the gorgeously sculpted aureole, and the Kirtimukham at the top of the same, this composition bears every hallmark of authentic Southern workmanship and would be a fine addition to your space.

Note the handsome features of Devi Rajarajeshvari, the haloed crown sitting on Her sharp-set brow. Beneath the thick coat of gold adornments lies a shape that is curvaceous and youthful, symbolic of fecundity and maternal nourishment. The foot of Her asana is flanked by lions, and in Her left anterior hand (She is chaturbhujadhari or one possessed of four arms) is the unmistakable sprig of sweet sugarcane.
