Uma, the great goddess and consort of Shiva is invariably portrayed in art as a slender, voluptuous woman of exquisite beauty. Saints revering her often go in raptures describing her sensual form. The saint Sundarar says:

Shiva passed this way
with the young woman
whose mound of Venus is like a cobra's
spreading hood

Shiva passed this way
together with the woman whose soft breasts
fill her taut bodice

Shiva passed this way
together with the woman
whose smile is white
as pearl

Shiva passed this way
together with the woman, perfectly adorned,
whose mound of Venus is veiled in cloth...

Shiva passed this way
together with the woman whose brow
is the crescent moon

Shiva passed this way
together with his woman
her waist thin as a vine

Uma, or Parvati as she is known in North India, is shown here seated adorned with a tall crown. The whole composition is characterized by a pronounced sensuality and fluent outline of the body. Her torso is bare while legs are draped with a clinging garment. The rotund breasts are ideal rather than natural. The high waistline is an influence of 11th century Chola Bronzes. In contrast to the slim waist the middle is expansive. The overall modelling is sensual.
