A Glimpse into Bastar Art

This exquisite pair of brass figures are brought to you from the heart of Bastar, Chhattisgarh, a region renowned for its vibrant tribal art. The figures depict giraffes, though stylized in a manner distinct to the Bastar tradition. Each piece is individually handcrafted using the lost-wax casting technique, a method passed down through generations of artisans. This process, also known as "Dhokra" after the Dhokra Damar tribes who are its traditional practitioners, involves creating a clay core, covering it with wax threads to form the desired design, and then encasing it in another layer of clay. Molten brass is then poured into the mold, melting the wax and taking its place. Once cooled, the outer clay shell is broken, revealing the final brass sculpture. The raw, earthy texture and intricate detailing are hallmarks of this ancient art form.

Echoes of Nature and Tradition

The choice of the giraffe as a subject, while perhaps seemingly unusual for a region geographically distant from the African savanna, speaks to the enduring human fascination with the animal kingdom. It is also important to remember that the giraffe, even outside its natural habitat, carries potent symbolic weight. Its height has often been associated with foresight, perspective, and a connection to the heavens. The intricate patterns adorning the bodies of these stylized giraffes are not merely decorative; they are drawn from the rich visual vocabulary of Bastar art, reflecting the natural world and the interconnectedness of all living things. Motifs of flora, fauna, and geometric abstractions are woven together, creating a visual narrative unique to each piece. These are not simply sculptures; they are embodiments of a living tradition, offering a tangible link to the artistic and spiritual heritage of the Bastar tribes. These brass animal figures evoke a sense of warmth, authenticity, and cultural richness. They are perfect for adding a touch of rustic elegance to any living space. Placing them on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or desk would make a unique conversation starter. Their presence offers a gentle reminder of the beauty and resilience of indigenous art forms.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
