The most acclaimed of the Kashmir crafts - the shawl has come to be an epitome of artistic excellence. The spinning and weaving skills of the craftsmen provided the foundation for the development of the Kashmir shawl as the textile of unique softness, warmth and beauty. Today, most of the shawls are made of the wool of the wild Himalayan mountain sheep, the Argali.

On the base of rich burgundy is embroidery all over in sharply contrasting saffron, white and green. It employs the minute satin stitch called 'chikandozi' as well as the slanted darm and stem stitch. The embroiderer has not cluttered the matan but given space for the pattern to be appreciated. At some distance lie four leaf clovers, joined by raceme on a thin, delicate stem. Small paisleys with a floral base appear on the stem as do the popular chinar leaves. The attractive stem goes all over the field, crossing overlapping and making graceful patterns, maintaining a carefully planned harmony.

The narrow border has a meandering vine with leaves and the outer edge has carefully placed leaves in a linear fashion to contain the freely roaming design of the field. The colour of the shawl is such that it is in league with black or white in versatility, and will match with just about any outfit.
