The history of textile design in India is very interesting. The earliest records of the use of ornament in textiles is in the Shatapatha Brahmana, where the various deities who preside over sections of cloth worn at the time of the yagna or a ritual are mentioned.

Today Benaras is one of the most important weaving centers where this kind of weaving and naksha bandi function. All over the field is the image of Lord Ganesha. Ganesha, the elephant headed god is one of the most important divinities of the Hindu pantheon. He is invoking for success at the beginning of every undertaking - the god being the success grantor. He sits cross-legged her replete with his karanda mukuta. In two hands, he holds the trident and a noose. The trident is a weapon of Shiva and the noose was given to him by Varuna, the god of waters. In one front hand he holds a modaka and the other hand is raised in abhaya mudra. The space between the Ganesha motifs is filled with stems of flowers.

This woven wonder has a border on all sides but the size and pattern of the horizontal and vertical border differs. The border at the two edges is more ornamental with a frill (jhalar) design on either side, ending in tassels. Not only is the theme and weave rich, the royal blue colour has chromatic wealth too.
