Many regions in India have imitated the Kashmir shawl, but in general, those woven outside Kashmir have rarely been made of the silky fleece from the Tibetan mountain goat and as a result have rarely been as fine in quality. In addition to being known for the exquisite lustre of the goat's wool, the Kashmir shawl is famous for its beautiful colours.

This 'khatraz' shawl displays brilliance of colours. In Kashmiri, khatraz means 'straight lines'. This is a striped shawl of different colours. The vertical stripes are all of different colours; what binds them together is the meandering floral design which runs diagonally on the vertical stripes. One colour does not agree with the next but all of them unanimously accept the single coloured pattern woven all over. The red, the beige, the turquoise, the saffron, green and many more, these subtle and exotic hues exude a colourful charm which harmonizes closely with the Mughal's deep appreciation of nature. The border again speaks of Mughal influence. The tall, elongated boteh is neither zoomorphic nor the tea pot boteh but striping a balance between the two. The pattern is made up of differently placed such botehs with a jal in between. The only repeated colour in the shawl is the green of the border or both sides which actually reins the wild colours!
