The Origin of the Legend

The story of Khatu Shyam traces back to the ancient scriptures of Hindu mythology.

As per the legend, Lord Krishna, during his earthly incarnation, took a lesser–known and unique form known as 'Shyam Baba' or 'Barbarik.' Barbarik was Bhima's grandson, one of the Pandava brothers from the epic Mahabharata.

Blessed with divine prowess and extraordinary bravery, Barbarik was sent to play a pivotal role in the war of Kurukshetra.

☸ However, before joining any battle, he promised his mother to witness the war from start to finish.

☸ For fulfilling the promise, Barbarik sat on the top of the hill present–day Khatu, where he could see the entire battlefield.

☸ As the war began, he used three arrows, i.e., divine gift, to predict and access the outcome of every battle.

☸ However, to his astonishment, he noticed that war was tuning in favor so only one side and the other, resulting in an eternal cycle of death and destruction.

☸ Worried about the endless bloodshed, Barbarik sought the advice of Lord Krishna.

☸ In response, Lord Krishna asked a very simple yet profound question, 'Who do you support?' He replied that he had pledged to support the side with the most casualties.

☸ To test his commitment, Krishna challenged him to demonstrate the power of his three arrows by shooting the leaves of a tree.

☸ Barbarik started using his arrows to cut the leaves and Lord Krishna quietly placed one of his leaves under his feet. When Barbarik fired his arrows, all the leaves were scattered.

☸ Seeing all this, Shri Krishna felt that he should not destroy both Pandavas and Kauravas, so he asked Barbarik to donate his head as Guru Dakshina.

☸ Because Barbarik considered Lord Krishna as his guru. That's why he donated his head at once.

☸ Barkarik expressed his desire to see the grandeur of the upcoming Mahabharata war in its entirety. That's why Lord Krishna kept his head on the top of the mountain.

☸ It is also believed that Lord Khatu Shyamji's head was also offered by Krishna to the river Rupavati.

☸ Khatu Shyamji's head was later found buried in Khatu village in Rajasthan.

☸ Pleased with Barbarik's unwavering dedication, Lord Krishna granted him a boon.

☸ Lord Krishna gave him the unique blessing of turning Barbarik into an idol of Khatu Shyam. This deity would witness the devotion of innumerable devotees for generations to come.

☸ According to Skanda Purana, Barbarik was the son of Ghatotkacha. In many other contexts he is cited as a warrior of the south.

☸ Khatu Shyamji was originally a Yaksha, who was reborn as a human.

☸ He was a man of principles who decided to help the weaker side, a decision that could have destroyed both the Pandavas and the Kauravas and left Barbarika alone alive.
