The themes of individual freedom, the human spirit, and opposition to authoritarianism were frequently present in kvoreck's literary works. His 1977 book "The Engineer of Human Souls" (which examines the experiences of a Czech exile in Canada and tackles themes of memory, identity, and the influence of literature) brought him widespread acclaim.

Kvoreck co-founded and ran 68 Publishers, a Toronto-based publishing business that specialised in dissident Czech authors' writing. For his services to writing, he was honoured with many prizes, including the Order of Canada.
